In December 2022, U. S. Department of Justice – Drug Enforcement Administration released information on the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 that enacted a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
HERE is the letter that explains this new requirement.
These are the groups that may provide resources and trainings that meets this new requirement, some are at no cost to the provider – however they may need to be a member of that group to access the training information.
American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Recognizing and Preventing Medication Diversion
Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS): PCSS-MOUD is a national training and clinical mentoring project developed in response to the opioid use disorder crisis. Made up of a coalition and led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP), PCSS-MOUD’s education and training resources are developed for healthcare providers and professionals.
Center for Disease Control (CDC) Opioid Specific Trainings: CDC developed trainings to assist clinicians and other healthcare personnel to provide patient-centered care. Trainings are offered as full or mini modules and patient cases. Many of the trainings offer continuing education (CE).
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Medications for SUD Resource Site: (Resource)

Center for Disease Control (CDC) Toolkit: The Addiction Medicine Toolkit is designed to provide an introductory overview of addiction medicine for clinicians and provide strategies that can be implemented in your practice.
Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Regional Centers (ROTA-R): (Resource) Develops and disseminates T/TA addressing opioid and stimulant use in rural communities. ROTA-R teams identify model programs, ensure provision of high-quality training, and develop and update materials related to prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery for opioid and/or stimulant use disorders.
Rural Health Hub: (Resource) This guide will help you learn about activities underway to address the opioid crisis in rural communities at the national, state, and local levels across the country.
Tribal Affairs: (Resource) serves as SAMHSA’s primary point of contact for tribal governments, tribal organizations, federal departments and agencies, and other governments and organizations on behavioral health issues facing American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Federal Drug Administration (FDA) BeSafe RX: (Resource) FDA has created a suite of downloadable materials to help health care professionals educate and support patients who may be using or considering an online pharmacy for buying medicine.
Opioid Response Network (ORN): Educational material from ORN partner organizations and federal agencies like SAMHSA. Within are opioid and stimulant misuse and use disorders prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery support products like curricula, trainings, distance learning programs, etc.
